Kenya-based worship leader and gospel musician Evelyn Wanjiru is expecting her first child after 10 years of prayer and waiting.
Evelyn, who visited Uganda in 2019 to minister at the Viga Music Awards, announced Tuesday that together with her and her husband Agundabweni Akweyu, that they have “been waiting for this season for 10 years” in their marriage.
Evelyn is best known for her hit songs “Mungu Mkuu”, “Celebrate”, “Jehovah Elohim”, “Waweza,” “Hossana,” “Nikufahamu” and “Tulia.”
“A blessed womb, God has fulfilled,” Evelyn said, thanking God for honouring His promise of giving them a child.
Evelyn acknowledged that there was always pressure to have children, especially for them because they are in the limelight, and some fans would go overboard and throw around insensitive comments, but they always kept their calm and trusted in God.
In the statement on Tuesday, Evelyn went on to encourage Christian couples waiting for the blessing of a child to hold on to God’s promises as He will eventually come through for them. The worship leader said, “I have come to realize that God has a track record of keeping His word.”
She quoted 1 Samuel 1:27, a passage in which Hannah gave thanks to God after experiencing so many years of childlessness: “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him,” the scripture reads.
“Look at me, ten years in marriage and I am now blessed,” read part of her post. “I pray for every couple almost giving up. Look at us and see what the Lord has done.”
“I don’t know who needs to hear this but I was hungry enough to wait for that promise to be manifested in my life. You don’t get what you pray for, you get what you’ve waited for and “Because those who wait upon the Lord are like Mt Zion they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” While we were waiting, we kept on singing Praises to Him, we kept on encouraging others yet we were also asking God questions. “Where are you? Until when, how many more doctors shall we see?”
“Then I would hear a voice saying… Get encouraged. The measure of your Temptation is equal to the measure of your Blessings. So, fight your battle delightfully for after every test there is a testimony and after every victory there is a prize,” she added. “Indeed, God is faithful, He has made everything beautiful in His time. Ecclesiastes 3:11
A big Thank you for everyone who ever mentioned us in your prayers and held our hands.”
A media source in Kenya reports that Evelyne “felt terrible every time anyone asked her why she and her husband still didn’t have a child despite being married for so long.”
“People don’t know my struggle. People don’t know how many times I have tried to have a baby. It hurt me. But my husband told me, ‘Why should other people stress you and I haven’t stressed you? Let’s wait upon God as He is the one that gives children.’ We are waiting on God’s time, I know it has been 7 years but we know God will do something,” narrated Wanjiru, in a previous interview quoted by the media source
Evelyn’s inability to get pregnant was due to a hormonal imbalance, sources say.
